On Thursday, July 12, the Lady Loyalists kicked off their season home opener versus Black Tide at 7pm at the Loyalists’ club house.
The Loyalists came out strong scoring a penalty kick early in the game. Black Tide scored soon afterward with Baukje van der Heide breaking the Loyalists’ backline, putting Black Tide on the board.
As Black Tide kicked off in the second half, the score was 8-5. The Loyalists’ continued to penetrate the Black Tide defensive line with a second try bringing the score to 13-5 late in the second half.
With sixteen minutes left to the half, the Black Tide back line managed to get the ball wide to van der Heide again as she ran over a Loyalist to score her second try, bringing the Black Tide to within three points (13-10).
With big tackles on the wing from Bailey Smallwood (Riverview High School), Black Tide managed to obliterate the Loyalists’ offense. It was Katuscya Gauvin, who with 9 minutes left in the game, made a huge run, dodging six Loyalist players and passed the ball off wide at the 5 meter line to winger, Jenn Brander who ran the ball in hard for the final try of the game. Gauvin also made her convert, putting the Black Tide ahead for a final score of 17-13.
The Black Tide women face the Woodstock Lady Rogues this Saturday, July 14 at MacNaughton High School for a 1:30pm kickoff for their season home opener. This game will be preceded by the Black Tide men’s season opener versus the Woodstock Wildmen with a noon-time kickoff.
