Last Saturday, August 25, at 11 am, the Black Tide women took the field to face their most fierce competition of the season, the Lady Loyalists in the 2012 New Brunswick Provincial Championships.
During the regular season, the Black Tide women were 8-0, making it their third consecutive year undefeated. When the Black Tide travelled to Fredericton earlier this season, they barely managed to pull out a three point win late in the game. When the Loyalists travelled to Moncton, the Black Tide only managed to scrape by with a 1 point victory. It was in the final that Moncton was able to grasp their largest win versus the Fredericton team; 15-10.
It was Michelle Kidd who, early in the game, took a penalty kick to put the team up 3-0. The favour was quickly returned by the Loyalists as they brought the score to 3-3. Standoff, Katuscya Gauvin and prop, Jen Miller, were able to contribute two tries in the first half, with Michelle Kidd contributing a conversion. The score was 15-3 at the half.
The Loyalists were able to penetrate the Black Tide’s defensive line in the second half with big runs by 8 man Emily Corey. Scoring two unanswered tries in the second half, the Loyalists brought the game within 5 points in the final minutes.
This gives the Black Tide women 4 consecutive NB Senior Women’s Provincial Championship titles: 2009-2012. The Loyalists were the last alternative team to win the title in 2008. Congratulations to the women on a season well played! The team would like to thank their sponsors Labatt, Sparx Wellness and the Chris Rock for their ongoing support. Lastly we would like to thank our coach, Ali Massoudi and our fans; without your hard work and dedication this season, our 4-peat wouldn’t have been possible!
