High School Rugby’s Undefeated Teams

Moncton High School Girls maintained their unblemished record yesterday.

MVHS Girls Brought a really good young team and will be surprising many teams in a year from now. Their back line was very quick and particularly their 10 and 12 broke the MHS line on more than one occasion. The unfortunate thing was that they showed up with 18 players and the long drive and warm playing conditions took its toll. MHS only really managed to put the game out of reach in the last 20 minutes when Jayde Olscamp(NB U18) at 10 ran in 2 tries and Haley Hasson at 12 ran in another off of a line break from half. MVHS got a well deserved try in the last 5 minutes of the game through sustained pressure on the MHS goal line. Good game played by both sides and some really exciting running rugby on both sides.

MHS capt Megan LeBlanc had an outstanding game at 8 and although she did not get on the score board she led from the front with many strong breaks including a well worked move that saw her take take the ball from the back of a scrum run a double scissor move with 10 and 12 and then break up field for a 30m run.

In Boys High School Rugby the undefeated MVHS boys are in town to play a wet game versus the HTHS Boys team at the CN Sportplex at 4:15pm.  Expect a low scoring game.  Results coming asap.

Riverview Girls Beat ODC 28-24 In A Thriller!

RHS went into this game with a O-1 record with a loss to unbeaten MHS while ODC had a couple of victories and were 2-0.

The game was always going to be a close one as a good rivalry exists between the two teams. The 100 or so fans at ODC field were treated to a great game that went down to the final whistle.

Riverview were  up 14-12 at the half on tries by centres Siobhan Murphy and Brett Cole. One of the highlights and the ultimate decider was that RHS kicker, Maggie MacPhee, kicked both her converts in the first half.

ODC maintained most of the possession during the entire game as they rucked extremely effectively. RHS had to be patient and were ultimately rewarded with the inevitable turnover and it always seem to come near their own goal line. Forced to live off only the ODC scraps, RHS made the very best of what ball they secured.

RHS coach Melanie Hughes praised the tireless effort of the back row of Karena McKay, Hannah Sears and Maggie MacPhee. “We had some leadership out there today from our grade 12 girls and in the end they were amazing”.

In the second half it was Jata McCabe at fly half who was setting  up Siobhan Murphy and Brett Cole again and they cashed in for two long range tries for RHS. Again, Maggie MacPhee nailed both converts.

The game closed out with ODC knocking on the RHS goal line. ODC crossed the goal line no less than 4 times but the RHS back row were able to prevent the ball carrier from touching down for the try.  Referree Adam Campbell indicated the ball was held up and RHS held on for the victory.

Coach Hughes finished by congratulating ODC. “That was an exciting game from teams with two different but very effective styles.”  RHS improves their record to 1-1 and hosts Miramichi Valley HS at RHS Field on Thursday @ 5:30 PM.

Try Scores for ODC were Celina Hebert, Rehema Sinzinkayo, Emily Donelle and Emily Chamberlain. Donelle converted two kicks and had some other booming runs.  1st year player second row player Jabara was threatening on every touch of the ball and was unlucky to find space enough to score.  Rarely have I see a lock so dynamic with ball in hand.

This sets up a rematch of last years provincial final on Thursday where both ODC and BMHS enter the game with a loss each.  No doubt that too will be a great game.

Scoring Summary: ODC Celina Hebert – 1 try Rehema Sinzinkayo – 1 try Emily Chamberlain – 1 try Emily Donelle -1 try / 2 converts RHS Siobhan Murphy – 2 tries Brett Cole – 2 tries Maggie Macphee – 4 converts

Thanks to Bob and Roxanne for the information, Head coaches Mel and Yves and the referee Curly.

A Team To Look Out For: École L’Odyssée High School Girls

Little has been said about the École L’Odyssée girls rugby team this year.  While sharing a division with the AAA provincial champs, BMHS and the team who recently bested them, MHS, it might be easy to overlook the other provincial finalist from just one year ago.

odc1

Veteran coach Yves Pellerin has been very impressed with the play of his rookies and his side has quietly opened up with a 2-0 record after last nights win over École Mathieu-Martin.  The 25-12 final score was a result of ODC jumping out to a 20-0 lead.  Great adjustments by MM brought the score close at 20-12 before the final try from ODC.

If you’re in the Riverview area today, ODC Girls are doing a fundraiser BBQ at the Riverview Kents!!!

odc 3

Two members of this team are on the New Brunswick Spruce Senior Women’s provincial team; Coline Ramade and Selina Hebert. They are scheduled to play Nova Scotia Keltic today at 4PM in NS. Good Luck to all the NB Women.

odc4

This coming week for ODC will see them play Riverview, BMHS and MHS. This is  no small order.  Winning 2/3 of those games may be required to advance to the semi final. Should they be successful against Riverview and bring a 3-0 record into play the 1 loss BMHS team, we maybe looking at an elimination game between the two and a rematch of last years final. However, overlooking RHS would not be advisable.

Check in tomorrow for announcements relating to Junior 7’s Rugby for Black Tide. Here’s a hint: U14, U16, U18 and U20.

BMHS vs HTHS Boys Rugby

Harrison Trimble High School (HTHS) hosted Bernice MacNaughton High School(BMHS) tonight in local High School Rugby action. HTHS are coming off of a great 10-0 win over rival RHS and are looking to improve to 2-0.  BMHS are restarting their program this year after a couple of years away.

BMHS 1

The final score was 15-0 for HTHS.  With the quality of Rugby HTHS presented earlier in the week, this is a very good showing for BMHS.

BMHS play again Tuesday in Riverview against the Royals and HTHS will look to go to 3-0, but will have to out class Miramichi Valley High School in The Miramichi.

BMHS Rookie Coach Robbie Baxter posted the following after the game:                  “Couldn’t be prouder of my rugby boys, they all played awesome in their first rugby game ever! We may have lost but we were in it til the end. #TraditionStartsHere #We‘llOnlyGetBetter”

Thanks to Head Coaches Jones and Baxter, and Referee Adam “Curly” Campbell.

Results May 14th: High School Girls Rugby

École L’Odyssée at Miramichi Valley High School.  The return of the École L’Odyssée centres and great play from the forward pack resulted in École L’Odyssée bettering MVHS 30-0 in this encounter. MVHS next play a tough MHS on Victoria Day in Moncton. ODC play École Mathieu-Martin today at 5:30pm at École L’Odyssée Field.

image1

In a potential provincial final preview, the host Moncton High School, on a neutral field MHS came out on top with a score of 10-0.  This is the first loss in 16 games for BMHS. You can be sure if these teams meet again, it will be a very close game.

image3

The first half of the game proved to be exactly what spectators had anticipated, an excellent game of back and forth rugby. Both teams had several line breaks and defenses on either side were required to make try-saving tackles. Towards the end of the end of the first half MHS was heavily pressuring BMHS deep in their half however BMHS stood tall and forced MHS into touch to end the half.

image2

The second half began much like the first half with good back and forth play by both teams. However, with the wind now at their backs MHS was able to kick the ball effectively and pin BMHS in their own half. After being unable to clear the ball for several minutes MHS recovered the ball and began pressuring BMHS for a try. BMHS once again stood tall deep in their own half but MHS was unrelenting in their offense. After putting several phases of excellent offensive play, MHS cracked the BMHS defense and ran in for a try in the corner. MHS failed to make the conversion kick and the score stood at 5-0. After receiving the kick-off MHS knew they had found a strategy that worked and they stuck with it, once again kicking the ball deep and pinning BMHS in their own half. BMHS put forth a valiant effort to put something together on offense but was unable to advance the ball beyond the half field mark. With ten minutes left in the game, MHS was once again pressuring BMHS deep in their own half. Repeating the same tactics they had used earlier in the half MHS was able to run another try in the corner. The ensuing conversion was not made and the score stood at 10-0. The final minutes of the game were played out deep in BMHS’s half and with MHS pressuring once again, BMHS was able to force them into touch on the ten meter line to end the game. Final score: 10-0.

image4

Thank you to Head Coaches Harris and Olivier and referee Ali Massoudi for facilitating an excellent and exciting game of rugby. Additionally, a big thank you to all of the parents and fans who came out to support both sides.

Both teams play again this coming Monday, May 18th with MHS hosting MVHS and BMHS hosting École Mathieu-Martin.

AA High School Girls Results

After a disappointing start in Miramichi Tuesday, the Lady Titans(Tantramar) returned home for an exhibition match against Harrison Trimble High School last night. It was the first female game of high school rugby played in the history of the Town and they did not disappoint.

Mackenzie Allen scored the team’s first ever try early in the game and the estimated crowd of over 200 roared to life. A try by Maxi Illingworth was converted by Cassandra Barczyk to put them up to 12-0.

The tighthead prop for the Trojans rumbled in for a try not long after, making the score 12-5.

HTHS are in a rebuilding season and kept their chins up in a display of toughness and resilience. The rest of the game did not go their way, but they did not give up. Olivia Tower and M. Allen scored tries and C. Barczyk converted another to make the score 24-5 at the half.

Second half scoring saw Karissa hicks put in a pair of tries, Katie Hess score one, and Desiree Gould convert 3 tries and score a try of her own from a long ~60m run.

The team is improving with every game and gaining confidence. Tuesdays game at 6pm in Salisbury at J.M. Armstrong will see them play the only other team in the 3 team AA division for the first time.

The Tantramar High girls rugby team traveled to Miramichi last night (Wednesday, May 12, 2015) to play their inaugural match against the James M. Hill “Tommies”.

11031759_960791660620365_7580245880110142591_n

The girls have been practicing steadily for over a month and their learning curve is steep.

They have athletes from other sports playing with them: hockey, volleyball, swimming, soccer, basketball, and cheer are well represented.

One of the things they are most proud of as coaches is the number of non-sports playing girls who have joined the team. They told them if they keep coming to practice they will turn them into rugby players – this is a sport that you can play and be involved in over a lifetime.

11165284_960791810620350_7108981673441465815_n

At the end of the first half the score was 10 – 0 for the Tommies. The TRHS “Red Squad” are the starting side. Holding a more experienced team to only two tries (5 points each) over 35 minutes (high school half duration) was a great beginning for the team. Both tries were scored by an experienced “8 man” (back row in the scrum) for the Tommies.

11165292_960791680620363_7120501936444346481_n

The final score was 44 – 0 for James M. Hill. The Blue Squad took over at the half and is made up of younger, less experienced players. Great elements of rugby skill were being demonstrated by individuals on the Blue side. As they gel as a team, their success will increase greatly. There are some great tacklers on this side and their scrum dominated the Tommies by the end of the game. There are two or three players that will probably be bumped up to the Red squad by next week.

In a post game huddle, Savannah Greenlaw (playing #10 a the “fly half”) was selected Woman of the match by the TRHS coaching team. The coaches could not have been more proud to be leading this team in their historic first season. Lorissa Johnson (teacher/coach), Jonathan W. Allen (coach), Kelly Foran (assistant coach), Amanda Rundle (assistant coach)

Please join them Thursday, May 15, 2015 at 6pm Tantramar High, Jardine Field for their first exhibition and home opener against the Harrison Trimble High Trojans.

Thanks to Jonathan W. Allen, Coach HTHS Girls AA Rugby, Eastern Division for the submission.
