It was a rough go for top seeds in all AAA action.
HTHS Trojans Host Final Friday June 3rd at 5 PM
Boys AAA:
GAME #1. HTHS travelled to play Oromocto High School and found themselves being exploited by the fast back play of the hosts. HTHS countered with powerful ball running and turned it into a back and forth affair.
A key shift in personnel changed the complexion of the Trojan side and resulted in the HTHS starting Fly Half, Guimond, move into play 6 and resulted in a try by the hard running Guimond. Strong play was seen all over the field by HTHS. The starting winger moved into scrum half kept things rolling. Outstanding games played by Fall and Hammer as usual. Shannon and McAllister waited for the best time to play their best games of the year. Rarely will you see such a big 7 as McAllister cover side line to sideline and tackle outside backs all day long. Shannon’s pressure defence resulted in 2 kicks charge downs, one for a try. Shannon’s 2nd try was simply amazing. Words doesn’t to it justice. Link to the video will be posted on the weekend.
Final Score was 39-29 for HTHS.
GAME #2: MVHS hosted Saint John High. Saint John, being the 2nd seed won on the road and will play HTHS for the championship Friday at 5.
Girls AAA:
GAME #1. In a division that has had NE finalists for 3 straight year, the Moncton High Purple Knights were strong favourites to win while hosting Saint John High.
Saint John Fly Half(Porrier on the game sheet I had) opened the game with 3 tries before setting up her full back for another. MHS fought their was back, but as MHS were threatening late, The Fly Half scored her fourth try and converted it for good measure. A solid win for the visitors. Strong play from their 8 and 10 while their team defence contained MHS just enough. This was a very exciting team to watch and demonstrated taking on the ball with great pace. They will be fun to watch in the final.
In addition to Porrier 4 tries and one convert(22 points), Graham added 7 points from a try and convert.
MHS try scorers were: Paterson, Green and Jones. One convert by LeBlanc.
Final Score was 29-17 for Saint John.
GAME #2. RHS had to visit powerhouse Simonds. Simonds were the only 1st seed in the AAA to defend home field this season and earn the honour to host an all Saint John Final this Thursday as that host SJS.
Good Luck to all the teams still in action. Great season by all those teams who participated this last weekend.
At the 15 minute mark of the second half RHS was awarded yet another penalty deep in HTHS territory. This time it was 8 metres out and it was a case of déjà vu where the tenth grader, Norman, scored his 2nd try of the game, again breaking tackles along the way. The conversion was made this time by Bessey.
NEXT:
RHS finish their season tomorrow vs JMH. HTHS and all other play off reps(MVHS for boys) and MHS & RHS on the girls side all have to wait until Friday’s results come in to learn who they play on Sunday.

RHS Threatened early and often, mostly via breaks from scrum half and captain McCabe. MVHS did amazingly well to limit her to one first half try. Half time score was 5-0.
yellow card for a high tackle. RHS were unable to capitalize. In fact, MVHS #2 Henderson scored a try for the visitors while being down a player.

BMHS came out and put up 34 points in the first half with the score at the mid-point being 34-7.
EMM outscored BMHS in the second half by a score of 10-7 and 2 tries to 1.
Girouard Breaks Up The Outside For The Try.

Mallard has been selected to play with the NB Spruce U18 side along with the following BMHS team mates: Sauter, Cullinian, & Boyce.
Dodge & Buchannan was selected to the U16 side.
EMM had both Gautreau & Vautour selected to the NB Spruce U16 along with Montiel as a U18 representative.

It was exactly one year ago today we posted about a must win game for RHS to keep their play off hopes strong. In that game, they were playing a tough ODC side and persevered in a tightly contested game in which both teams scored 4 tries a piece.
Guess what the news is today? That’s right, RHS again earned a win over ODC and again both teams scored 4 tries each. The kicking game resulted in 3/4 conversions for RHS this time while ODC were unable to convert any tries.
This sets up RHS who host the oncoming MVHS side in a game kicking off in RHS tomorrow. RHS practice today would have been up beat and relaxed, fitting of a good build up on a day prior to a match.
MVHS will be looking to play a little more expansive in hopes of not getting sucked into playing 10 man rugby against a strong RHS forward pack and half back pairing.
A win will set the table for RHS to be the 2nd representative from their division in the provincial semi final. MVHS will be looking to cap off a strong season and will have an exhibition game versus HTHS next week.
RHS Fly Half from the 2015 provincial champs and this years RHS Scrum Half Jata MacCabe and ODC pairing of Fly Half Emily Donelle & Forward Rehema Sinzinkayo have all been named to the NB U18 Spruce Girls Rugby Team for 2016. Congratulations.

MVHS(5)@MHS(17)
Miramichi Valley High School(MVHS) visited undefeated Moncton High School(MHS) in girls action on Monday May 16th.
MHS have been steam rolling opponents of late and hosting MHS might hint at a lopsided game, if you weren’t following MVHS this season. MVHS had strong forward play highlighted by their powerful locks. A very eye-opening game from the MVHS 12 impressed all on-lookers with her direct running and a great first step.
The whole first half resulted in one converted try for MHS and a total score of 7-0 for the hosts. The key to the game turned out to be the opening 15 mins of the 2nd half. During this time MHS scored another 2 quick tries and opened the score to 17-0.
Prideful MVHS did answer back. Threatening to score on MHS for the last 10 mins of the game, and were finally rewarded with a try in the last-minute of play. Make the final 17-5. Caution to those who may put too much stock in the final score line. In addition to the last try of the game, MVHS also had a try held up by MHS flanker Holloway who managed to turn a MVHS player in the tackle and somehow got under her in the end goal.
MHS play EMM on the 24th in a make up game and are in position to host the provincial semi in Moncton on May 29th. That will be a feature game, with coverage leading up to and following it.
The result for MVHS, while falling short of the win, proves once again that they earned and deserved their wins over ODC and EMM. The bigger question is can they hand Riverview High School an upset in Riverview tomorrow?
Mathematically, MVHS are still in the play-off hunt on this, the eve of their last season game. In order to cling to the play-off hopes, they need a win vs RHS.
The goal for MVHS is to continue their fast defense and aggressive play at the breakdown. The MVHS #8 was strong in the tackle, durable all day, and also impressive with respect to foot speed. This matches up well versus RHS. There will be a huge requirement for the MVHS 9 to keep up with RHS’s McCabe at the scrum half position. The wild card in this one may come down to how successful MVHS are at releasing their 12 into space.
It is quite likely the MVHS @ RHS game this Thursday will be come down to the wire. This game may not be one about who makes the fewest mistakes, but who makes the last mistake.

Literally, A Jaw Dropping Game
This was an amazing game. BMHS had to make some telling adjustments to deal with some minor injuries and the biggest of those changes resulted in power house centre Boyce being moved to full back. As a result, Boyce was kept off the score board, but was still delivery huge tackles around the field.
As a result even more of the defensive workload would fall to Lund at 10, who did well with the task.

BMHS required many players to stand out to keep pace in this one. Atkins was a pleasant surprise and rose to the occasion.

The Atkins try seemed to be the emotional boost BMHS needed.

BMHS scored late in the first half and Jensen converted both 1st half tries. For MHS LeBlance converted 2/3 of the MHS tries. The half time score was 19-14.

The second half saw MHS increase their lead by 2 points sue to a converted try vs a BMHS unconverted try. The score was 29-22 for MHS and BMHS seemed to have an emotional charge about them. With only 10 minutes left, BMHS looked to have more left in the tank.
After watching MHS only score once in the 2nd half versus ODC recently, it might have been fair to think this could be a finger bitter.
Lapierre Puts Down The Back Breaking Try/Friendly Fire
With good support of Hassen(who quietly scored 2 tries in this one) Lapierre made it to the corner. With Cullinan in pursuit and Boyce on an intercept course, it was teammates who came out the worse for wear. Cullinan would suffer a hard smack on the arm. Boyce would be reminded to attempt a wrap in the tackle, as the shoulder charge is foul play.
Lund On One of Many Line Breaks
The LaPierre try made the score 34-22 and seemed to end the game. MHS would score another try, this time a very long run from prop A. Jones, which was converted.
The score sheet lists try scores as follows:
MHS: Paterson, LaPierre, A.Jones(2), Hassan(2). Missing from the score sheet is a try, which if Memory serves was a 2nd half try by Pharuns that was scored under the posts.
BMHS: Lund, Atkins & Sauter(13).
Clowater Played A Blinder.
Great efforts of some players kept off the score sheet would be headed up by BMHS flanker Clowater. A gutsy effort worth watching. Great in the tackle and dangerous with ball in hand.
BMHS 9 Mallard supplied great service and even threw the line out balls, which were very good.
MHS Flanker Dooley had a great all around game. This is the player who will deliver a huge try when the teams need it. Quick at the ruck and relentless running with the ball.
MHS Prop Pairing of Paterson and Jones(both of whom scored), deserve another mention. Rarely do you see dominant scrumming, great defence and dangerous running from a prop pairing, and these two had many carriers and didn’t slow down.
Final Score: MHS 41- BMHS 22
