Black Tide Women Host Irish Today

The Saint John Irish come into Moncton this evening with a 1-3 record for the season. They are still in a position to rocket into 2nd place in the division should they come away with a bonus point victory today.  With only 2 weeks remaining on the schedule and 2 games total remaining for each team, this match could be the decider on who hosts the semi final.  The road for the Irish is steep as they have there last regular season game versus the undefeated Loyalist  to end the season. As it stands, the Loyalist will host the semi versus the 4th seed.

Katuscya Gauvin of the Black Tide runs by a Saint John Irish player.

Black Tide vs Saint John Irish.

Mathematically the Black Tide could gain enough points to supplant the Loyalist in first place before the end of the regular season, but they would need the loyalist to drop the final two games.  An unlikely prospect from an undefeated side.

The Black Tide Women’s side have been improving and building as the season has worn on.  They have taken on an additional challenge of participating in a new Maritime Elite division which has allowed them to play against two Nova Scotia sides(Tars and HRFC). The added experience was just what is needed for this young side.

There are a few things you should now about the Black Tide Women. First is that they are the 6 time provincial champ, Winning every provincial championship from 2009 to present. Secondly, they have a new coaching team this year. Yves Pellerin and Kim Sinclair(Player/coach) are looking to build up Black Tide club rugby while maintaining a high level of on the field performance. Thirdly, and most surprising, the average age of this team is 19 years 7 months and 24 days of today.

Throughout the run of success, Black Tide women have seen a changing of the guard and remained on top.  It would be tough to imagine that they have ever had a younger team than this.  When the championship streak started the vast majority of this team was in Middle school.

With the way this team has been gelling and improving, confidence is elevating as they appraoch the playoffs and it should be exiting to see how todays game plays out.

Kick Off is at 7pm, ODC School Fields.

Royal Magic: RHS Royals Win AAA Provincial Championship!

All the question had been asked: Would MHS be able to Run the Table and go undefeated? Could RHS possibly stop the MHS Jaugernaught? How could RHS overcome a 29-0 loss only one month ago to MHS at the outset of the regular season? How could the smaller RHS girls possibly take on the larger and stronger MHS pack? Approximately 500 fans, family and friends needed answers to these questions and came out to watch the 2015 version of the Wallace Cup.  What a memorable game, with RHS posting a 12-7 upset victory.

IMG_4969

RHS started with the wind at their back and were able to play much of the first half in the MHS end. Unfortunately RHS were unable to convert this territorial advantage into points. MHS opened the scoring with a converted try to go up 7-0 after 30 minutes. Jayde Olscamp scored the try from a loose ruck, providing the convert was Katrina Bohnet.  RHS answered on the last play of the first half when inside centre, Siobhan Murphy, ran in a 50 meter try and touched down in the far right corner of the MHS end zone. RHS Captain and goal kicker extraordinaire, Maggie MacPhee, took her time with the conversion attempt from the sideline, as she sorted out the gusting wind currents that were coming at a 45 degree angle but from over her right shoulder. MacPhee made no mistake as she let the wind draw the kick through the MHS goal posts and RHS entered the turn tied 7-7. RHS Head Coach Melanie Hughes commented “Maggie has made some very good kicks for us all year but this was by far the most difficult angle and distance” MHS coach Jaco Olivier offered this “our scrums and rucks were going well through most of the first half, but RHS were also playing well and putting some pressure on us. RHS made some adjustments in their front row with about ten minutes left in the first half which changed the rhythm of the game.” (Note RHS had brought on props Caissey Pitchford and Eni Oguntona).

IMG_4614

The second half saw both teams with a balanced territorial share, however Moncton High was winning the battles for possession of the ball. Riverview responded with a strong defence, led by flankers Hannah Sears and Cassy Smith. RHS Coach Bob Wallace offered this “We had been practicing our tackling right up to game time, as we needed to have a system to bring down the MHS power forwards who were much bigger and stronger than us. We had devised a plan to use our female coaches for tackling practice. When two of the three coaches limped off the field on Thursday evening practice, I had a hunch our defence was processing our strategy and gaining confidence but I really never expected such and outstanding effort and by so many. In the end, when you can hold a team like MHS to only 7 points, that speaks very loud. Cassy and Hannah were leading the RHS forwards and making key tackles behind MHS the gain line. The RHS backs were also doing well on defence, with diminutive Fly-half Jata McCabe (grade 10) punching above her weigh class all game. Jata’s task was simple, contain the MHS #10 Jayde Olscamp (NB U18). Jata limited Olscamp to a single try. Jata also provided inspiration to the rest of the back line. Wallace continued, “When Jata limped off the field with 5 minutes to go, she was battered, bruised and had a black eye, however she had completed her assignment and had managed to contain the much bigger and powerful Olscamp. “We turned the fly-half job over to Siobhan Murphy. Siobhan was having an outstanding game as well, combining some good runs on offence with sure and reliable tackling on defence. Also, our full-back Grace Park was also doing well on defence and had made three open field tackles which robbed MHS of sure tries. Grace was the last line of defence at full back. With the game winding down, Grace also made a terrific catch at full speed, from a booming MHS punt, and she returned it deep into the MHS half to the delight of the RHS supporters. Grace told me after the game that she could see her entire 3 year career at RHS coming down to making that one single catch. Grace made no mistake and came through for the team and had a career day for sure.”

IMG_4264

RHS Head Coach Melanie Hughes felt that the Royals were able to combine their overall team fitness, patient defence (bend but don’t break) and a total team concept where each player had a role and they played for each other. “Our overall fitness prevailed. That’s where we started with our MaxFit training program in Feb. and that seemed to be our competitive edge during all those tight games”. Hughes added, “Some of these girls have also learned a lot of Rugby skills and knowledge in four years here at RHS. If you consider that each year we do 10 MaxFit Training sessions, that’s 40 MaxFit sessions over 4 years. We would also practice 20 times each year, so thats 80 practices, and we usually would play 12 games per season so that 48 games. I guess we used a bit of that knowledge and experience today as well.” Hughes concluded by acknowleding the super game that MHS played. “MHS kept coming at us all game. Some of our girls are very sore but that’s championship rugby. There were no losers on that pitch. MHS will be a factor for many years and their day will come.”
IMG_4390IMG_4848
Hughes concluded by thanking all the players. “The girls will remember this season for the rest of their lives. This team was very tight and enjoyed playing for each other. The Wallace Cup is back in Riverview and we will be pleased to display it in the Trophy Cabinet. I am not sure if anybody planned for that. The 2015 Banner will be hung up in the gym with the other two rugby banners (Girls 2012 and Boys 1985). And just maybe, someone will call RHS a Rugby School as opposed to a school where rugby is played.”

IMG_4435IMG_4485

Special thanks and congratulations to Bob Wallace for his work with the team and in helping us with information for so many posts.  Thinking of you a lot today Jim.  It’s been 15 months without you.  I’m sure no one is prouder of this group than you.

To Be The Best, You Have To Beat The Best, Twice.

From There to Here, Part 2: Moncton HS Purple Knights

To Be The Best, You Have To Beat The Best, Twice. This was always going to be the case for The MHS Purple Knights.  Who they need to beat twice to be crowned Champions are the RHS Royals.  Fortunately, they have already beaten them once, so it’s as simple (not easy) as doing it again, this Friday at 5:30pm on field 3 of the CN Sportplex.

The Story of the Moncton High Purple Knights was one that changed from surprising potential to that of strong favourite in the matter of 70 minutes.  We had all seen the flashes last year, we had all heard the chatter over the winter.  It goes back into last year where teams (like ODC and BMHS) that played MHS were given a run for their money.  While those teams went on to play in the finals, MHS began to focus on this year.

MHS1

The pre-season had everyone asking the questions about how good MHS would be this year and an exhibition tournament rarely answers more questions than it asks but when it took a 100 metre try for the reigning champs to pull to a draw with MHS, it certainly had us asking the right questions.

The 70 minutes where innuendo and suspicion turned to conviction was the season opener versus RHS.  Riverview HS Royals are the real deal every year.  Drubbing them by a 29-0 score left us with the impression that either MHS are a juggernaut or that RHS wasn’t as good as expected. The latter has been dis-proven, so we have only one thing left to determine.

mhs2

From that point on Moncton HS have been looked at as the favourite. The biggest question asked of them since is if they are unbeatable?  They have consistently answered with a “No, we are not beatable, but thank you for trying”. These words are mine of course and not of their team or anyone involved.   https://monctonrfc.com/2015/05/20/unbeatable-moncton-high-girls-are-off-to-a-strong-start/

It is worthy of note that they did receive a strong game from BMHS, and were tested to the limit by ODC in what ended in a 12 all tie.  On the surface those results may not be hailed as an exclamation point on a season, but it is often the greatest challenge that facilitates the most learning.

These tests help strengthen the confidence of the team.  This is a versatile group, not dependant on the actions of one or two.  Quite uniquely MHS is a team of many pieces fit together, oddly; a loose head prop (and sometimes flank) at outside center, a full back at flank, a winger at hook, a fly-half and inspirational leader at 8 man, a fly-half that runs like an 8 man, a four year vet at inside center and a generous helping of rookies.  Last but not the least this team has gotten a lot of motivation from an outside source, a girl by the name of Kayla Montgomery. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=11909407

This group may sound like a shuffled deck of cards, but certainly they have the right composition and the results thus far leave us with only one conclusion. Obviously the talents have been applied properly.

The Knights were able to play their preferred style of Rugby against the visiting SJHS during the semi this past Sunday.  It is generally understood that MHS have a couple of big strong runners and hard-hitting tacklers.  People are often quick to comment on the athleticism of the MHS team. That might be exactly what MHS want people to talk about. Meanwhile, MHS had five different people on the score board last Sunday vs SJHS, 3 Forwards and 2 Backs. If there is one thing that  can be said, it is that they are a very well-balanced team with strength in the right places.

MHS3

MHS are a very well-drilled and organized team.  Their approach on the offence is methodical, patient and composed.  Their defence is structured and as good as any of the teams playing and they add in a few huge hits to boot.  The reality of the 70 minute long game is that one big hit rarely makes or breaks a game, instead it’s the other 100 tackles and more importantly the 10 that lead into a turnover in which the real balance of the game will sway.

Quick up defence and strong counter rucks create turnovers for MHS and they do it in a fashion more aggressively than most.  Aggression on the team wide level is a function of approach and intent, not athleticism.  This might be the most impressive thing about this team.

From the outside looking in, I can’t imagine the MHS season to have been any more successful than it has been thus far.  I suspect, however, that from the inside the season has gone as expected and no one is surprised with the success so far.

The story line perhaps could not be better. Riverview High School Royals at the Moncton High School Purple Knights.  Thanks to all the coaches, support staff, parents, teachers, students and rugby players for making this the best high school season.  Good Luck in the finals to both teams.  No doubt this will be a great contest.

From There to Here, Part 1: Riverview HS Royals

The Riverview High School Girls have achieved admittance into the AAA Provincial Final kicking off this Friday June 5th at 5:30 Pm at Field 3 of the CN Sport Plex.

rhs2

They have to replay the Moncton High Purple Knights. In the first encounter MHS won 29-0 on May 11th.  That is quite the comprehensive result and certainly more than enough reason to hail MHS as the favourite and perhaps deservedly so.  Let’s face it, this occurred less than a month ago. So what chance does RHS have?

Let’s look a little deeper into this and try to add some perspective.  First off, the season isn’t won or lost on the first day of the season and RHS have proven that.  It certainly made their road uncompromising, but what doesn’t kill you…

It’s not like there isn’t history far and wide showing this result is still to be determined.  Immediately dozens of examples that come to mind. The most recent being the RHS Boys who on May 15th dropped in a 32-5 loss to MVHS only to travel into MVHS 2 weeks later and come away with 35-32 win.  RHS proved they could swing a 30 point variance in a number of weeks.  That is the challenge set forth now for the girl’s side.

For anyone who thinks beating this team once was enough are overlooking the obvious.  This isn’t the same team who opened the year versus MHS.  To illustrate how this team has been playing against top competition let’s review how both RHS and MHS have fared against the other top teams in their division.

MHS earned a 10-0 victory over BMHS.  Just 11 days later RHS put up a 36-10 result on the defending champions, BMHS.  In between these two games RHS did something no other team this year has done, they beat École L’Odyssée 28-24.  MHS managed a draw.  In these two games, RHS has a 20 point differential better than MHS and are 2-0 while MHS had one win and one tie.

rhs1

The reason for this disparity maybe play styles, or it may be something else. Often times we can’t put our figure on these things and call them “intangibles”.  It would be more appropriate in this case to call it experience.

Our sport is easy to learn and play and nearly impossible to master.  Experience, knowledge and ability to adapt on the day is something all players struggle to master.  Bigger, Stronger, Faster is great, but only if you need size, have an opportunity to use your strength and react just as fast as your opponent.  RHS are comfortable with matching their athleticism with anyone, realize size and strength in set pieces are minimized due to the u19 rules and are banking on their experience to ensure faster reaction to all situations, whether that be after the whistle and during open play.

The reason I claim that RHS are more experienced, is based solely on championship experience.  In 2012 RHS won the AAA Provincial Championship.  Not only that, but five 9th graders from that team are the core of the current squad. Captain and Leader of the team, not to mention top scorer, is # 8 Maggie McPhee,  lock Allison Aitken, winger Allie Ayles, scrum-half Amelia Basterache and dynamic inside center Siobhan Murphy comprise the core of five all playing their fourth year of HS Rugby.

rhs5

Going into the Semi Final’s game Bob Wallace had this to say when speaking about these girls; “This group has provided much of the inspiration for our current squad.  They have been great from a team perspective and (they) don’t want this season to end.” As fate would have it, RHS required heroics to overcome a 12-0 deficit with 12 minutes remaining in the semi, and wouldn’t you know it, but Murphy and McPhee were the names credited for the 14 points needed to win.

With quality players like M&M, there is no chance the Royals will have an ounce of quit on the pitch Friday.  The growth of this team through adversity has made them strides better than could have been envisioned just a month ago.  The performance of this group as a whole can be considered nothing short of a blazing success, but these girls aren’t the type to be satisfied with yesterday’s win, because they are looking forward to tomorrows game.

Check back tomorrow for Part 2: Moncton HS Purple Knights.

Moncton High School Purple Knights Look To Run The Table!

MHS came into the AAA semis after being severely tested by ODC a few days before. They knew that their performance against ODC would not be good enough to best SJHS in what was going to be a battle of the forwards.

MHS vs SJHS

MHS vs SJHS

SJHS did not disappoint.  They brought a determined pack and a hard running 8 man with them into this game. Today however, having home-field advantage played in the favor of the Purple Knights. MHS started really strong and after a strong tackle from prop Allie Jones, culminating in a turn over, MHS managed to wrestle control of the game away from SJHS. The hard running MHS 10, Jayde Olscamp, dotted down for the first score of the game.

SJHS managed to test MHS throughout the first half and their best chance came minutes prior to half time with a certain try beckoning was not for the excellent tackle of the MHS Grade 10 full-back, Rori LeBlanc. Half Time score: 15 to 0.

The Second half started very much in the same fashion as the first.  MHS exerted tremendous pressure on the SJHS scrum, line-out and contesting the ruck situation through their speedy Flankers, Jill Breau and Olivia Cormier.

Megan LeBlanc played another inspirational captains game at 8 and kept the team focused and ready to compete throughout this bruising contest. Final score for MHS was 27 to 0 with the following players all contributing, Jayde Olscamp at Fly-Half, Flanker, Olivia Cormier, Outside Centre Claire Dooley and the two towers of power Allie Jones and Kristen Bulman each rumbling over for a try.

Amazing Game, Story Book Ending; Riverview High School Girls Advance To AAA Finals!!!

Weather was 11 degrees and drizzly with a  swirling and gusty wind. definitely not the kind of conditions that the RHS girls were hoping for. These conditions were familiar and favoured the home team from Simonds High School, which had a much larger set of forwards.

Pic from 2012 RHS HS team

Pic from 2012 RHS HS team

In the first half RHS struggled for any clean possession from the scrums and lineouts and were lucky to have only been down 5-0 at the half on an unconverted try. Coach Bob Wallace explained “RHS was defending well and our tackling was relatively good so that kept us close.” I guess you could say they were patient but that certainly was not in their game plan.  The girls knew how to be patient, and they did the “bend but don’t break defence” which is part of the modern game.

In the second half the RHS forwards elected to stay with the Pick and Go’s from the base of the rucks. The fitter RHS forwards lead by Karena MacKay, Hannah Sears and Allison Ingham finally started to penetrate the opposition territory. Simonds capitalized on a box kick that bounced back into the hands of their inside centre who was charging forward and she outpaced the RHS back line pursuit and scored under the post. The convert was good and the score was Simonds 12- RHS 0 with 12 minutes to go and the crowd going wild.

RHS were desperate and struggling for any kind of clean possession.  Captain Maggie MacPhee elected to go with quick tap penalties and connected with inside centre Siobhan Murphy who weaved her way through the Simonds defence and touched down for a try under the posts with about 7 minutes remaining. MacPhee wasted no time and was good on the convert and the score was 12-7 for Simonds with time winding down. This silenced the experienced Simonds crowd as they sensed that this RHS squad was for real and that  the momentum was shifting. With time winding down the fitter and faster RHS forwards were  first to the rucks and finally getting the possession they were denied earlier.

Maggie MacPhee decided to take matters into her own hands and scored a try from a loose ruck. She touched down about 15 meters to the left of the posts. With the aid of a mighty boot, some uncanny insight, MacPhee marched back about 30 meters and a slight calculation for the wind, nailed the the kick and RHS finally had the lead and the victory.

Coach Wallace commented on how challenging it was to win in Simonds “Simonds teams come to play and have a great history. In fact, I can’t recall ever winning there . I do recall loosing there on a number of occasions.”

The beat goes on for RHS. “We will take a day or so to regroup and then look to the task at hand.” says Wallace.  The RHS Royals will face the juggernaut MHS team for the NBIAA Girls AAA Championships trophy, coincidentally called The Wallace Cup. Time and location to be confirmed.

The Riverview High School Boys fell in a comprehensive game leaving Harrison Trimble High as the only NE team remaining in the final hunt.  The Southeast often dominate boys rugby and no doubt HTHS will have their hands full.
