Moncton Men win Halifax 7s, Women win 3 of 4

The cold, wind, and about 50mm of rain weren’t enough to stop the Moncton RFC Men on their way to capturing the Halifax 7s Championship Trophy! The men took on all in their path with an impressive undefeated record, which is sure to set the tone for the upcoming Parlee Beach 7s Tournament on July 27.

The Women continued their dominance by recording 3 wins out of 4, and were unlucky not to advance due to their points differential. This is sure to add motivation in their Saturday June 22 away game vs Saint John Trojans.

A Successful Season for All!

With the New Brunswick rugby season coming to a close last weekend, we have many accomplishments to recognize within the Black Tide community.

First off, we would like to congratulate both our men’s and women’s sides for their successes this season; both teams finished first in their provincial leagues with the men defeating the Fredericton Loyalists in the NBRU final and  travelling to PEI to face the Mudmen in the Maritime finals for the Wheaton Cup. Unfortunately, the men came up short, falling to the PEI Mudmen 27-14 in a hard fought game.

The Mount Allison Mounties women’s team were victorious over NSCC in the ACAA championship final with a 23-20 win in overtime. Black Tide members Isabelle Caissie, Katie Robertson, Bethany Toczko, Maddy Metallic, Michelle Kidd and Michelle Tingley all played in the ACAA final, coached by Black Tide scrumhalf, Marrissa Arsenault; fullback, Jennifer Brander and tighthead prop, Kim Sinclair. First year head coach Kim Sinclair was also named 2012 ACAA Coach of the Year.

Thanks for a great season everyone! See you at the year end banquet!

Black Tide Down Trojans

Moncton Black Tide men hosted the Saint John Trojans on a very rainy
Saturday afternoon.  Moncton was looking to avenge their only loss of
the season in Saint John a month ago when they fell 25-24 on a last
second try from the Trojans.

Both teams came out strong and traded penalty kicks in the first 10
minutes to make it 3-3.  The wet weather was causing some handling
errors for both teams and the kicking game was attempted by both
team’s fly halves.  Play was still mostly occuring within the middle
40 meters of the field.  The Trojans took a penalty just inside the
Moncton half at about 15th minute mark and Moncton full back, Francois
Buret, hit a 45 meter kick to put them them up 6-3.

In the 25th minute, Moncton started sustaining pressure in the
Trojan’s end and they were rewarded with a try from their 8man Shane
MacDow from 10 meters out.  Buret missed the conversion, but only by a
few centimeters. The score was now 11-3 Moncton.

The Trojans attempted another penalty kick, but the 35 meter attempt
was pulled left.  The Moncton player in the end zone atttempted to
catch the missed kick but knocked it on and the ball fell directly to
an oncoming Trojan who touched the ball down for a try.  The Trojans
hit their conversion to make the score 11-10, which ended up being the
half time score.

Play continued in the second half and things were looking very even on
the field.  Between minutes 50-55 coach Paul Arsenault made 4 tactical
substitions and the new players brought a lot of energy to the field.
Flyhalf Damian Murphy lead the charge by breaking 4 tackles and
scoring a 30 meter try.  Then he setup speeding winger Simon Dellatre
for a 20 meter try.  Both converts were hit by Buret and Moncton was
up 25-10, which was the final score.

Man of the match for Moncton was Francois Buret who had 10 points
kicking for goal, made a number great kick returns and sealed any
holes that occured in the Moncton defense.

Black Tide Women Make It a 4-peat!

Last Saturday, August 25, at 11 am, the Black Tide women took the field to face their most fierce competition of the season, the Lady Loyalists in the 2012 New Brunswick Provincial Championships.

During the regular season, the Black Tide women were 8-0, making it their third consecutive year undefeated. When the Black Tide travelled to Fredericton earlier this season, they barely managed to pull out a three point win late in the game. When the Loyalists travelled to Moncton, the Black Tide only managed to scrape by with a 1 point victory. It was in the final that Moncton was able to grasp their largest win versus the Fredericton team; 15-10.

It was Michelle Kidd who, early in the game, took a penalty kick to put the team up 3-0. The favour was quickly returned by the Loyalists as they brought the score to 3-3. Standoff, Katuscya Gauvin and prop, Jen Miller, were able to contribute two tries in the first half, with Michelle Kidd contributing a conversion. The score was 15-3 at the half.

The Loyalists were able to penetrate the Black Tide’s defensive line in the second half with big runs by 8 man Emily Corey. Scoring two unanswered tries in the second half, the Loyalists brought the game within 5 points in the final minutes.

This gives the Black Tide women 4 consecutive NB Senior Women’s Provincial Championship titles: 2009-2012. The Loyalists were the last alternative team to win the title in 2008. Congratulations to the women on a season well played! The team would like to thank their sponsors Labatt, Sparx Wellness and the Chris Rock for their ongoing support. Lastly we would like to thank our coach, Ali Massoudi and our fans; without your hard work and dedication this season, our 4-peat wouldn’t have been possible!

Black Tide Women Look to Improve Their 8-0 Record

On Thursday, August 8th at 7pm the Black Tide women will take the field at MacNaughton High School with hopes of improving their 8-0 record regular season record. Having defeated the Fredericton Loyalists last Thursday, the Black Tide women look to finish their third consecutive regular season undefeated with a win over the Lady Trojans.

Thursday’s game will prove to be a sure test for the team as they will be missing many of their younger clutch players who are away this week competing at nationals in Sherbrooke, QC.

The end of the season is soon approaching for the women as league semi finals are set to take place Saturday, August 18th and finals on Saturday, August 25. Should the women continue with their winning record, they will host the finals at MacNaughton at the end of the month. Good luck girls!
