High School Girls Rugby Review/Preview

Monday May 11th saw Moncton High at home against Riverview High to kick off the season.  The upstart hosts bettered Riverview 29-0.  Riverview are understood to be a perennial power house and recent provincial champions.  As a result we may infer that Moncton high is the team to beat this year.

BMHS 2014 NBIAA AAA Champions

This assertion will be put to the test tomorrow, May 14th at 4:40 PM, as the 2014 NBIAA Girls Rugby AAA Champions BMHS Highlanders host Moncton High School on Field 3 behind the Moncton Sportsdome. A recent exhibition game between the two garnered very dramtic 7 all draw, highlighted by a 100 metre try. Video is pinned to our page @ http://www.facebook.com/MonctonBlackTideRugbyPage. Moncton High know they are in for a tough match; “It will be our and their biggest test this year. This is the team we have been waiting for all season and we are looking forward to the challenge” says Coach Olivier.

The other game on tap tomorrow is last years other finalist, École L’Odyssée, opening their season in The Miramichi against Miramichi Vally High School. Odyssée Coach Yves Pellerin when ask for his thoughts going into this game said “We don’t know anything about them”. All MVHS teams play hard rugby, this will be a good game.

Trimble Top Riverview 10-0 in High Schools Boys Rugby

From the 5:30 kick off at the four plex through most of the first half, Riverview High School boys team were on the offensive versus Harrison Trimble High School.  Despite wet weather and the wind in their faces Riverview were willing to work it wide early and attack with the outside backs.

HTHS defense was up to snuff and calmly made their tackles.  Riverview then mixed it up with some nifty 9-8 play opening up many runs for the Riverview 8 Man.

One of many 9 passing to 8 plays that opened up space for the strong running 8 of Riverview.

Riverview were unable to get any points and late in the half HTHS scrum half Jon Blackier hit a difficult kick to open up the scoring.

The first half ended with a 3-0 score for HTHS. One yellow card was issued to the HTHS #13 for repeated high tackles.

The second half saw a change in tone.  Playing into the wind HTHS found their tempo using a lot of crash ball and maintained good field position and ball possession.  Constant pressure from HTHS resulted in the Royals having to clear their lines a number of times.

Trimble put in at the line out on the Riverview 5 metre line.

The crash ball and tight running did pay off for Trimble, not only in reduced handling errors but also in a try from prop, now playing 8, Brody Fall.  Blackier converted bringing the score to 10-0.

Trimble again got over the line with ball carrier Goboi but were not able to ground the ball before the whistle.  Riverview played hard through the end of the game and were awarded a penalty kick inside the Trimble half.  Unable to convert on the kick, the game ended in a 10-0 score

It was a game of two halves. Riverview owning the first and Trimble returning the favour in the 2nd.  Great tackling and confident defense was the story for both sides on the day. The Trimble style certainly suited the weather and may have been the difference maker.

Thanks to Head Coaches Trevor Mouland and Jeff Jones, and referee Paul Arsenault.

*Breaking News* Coach Jones may have been seen releasing air from the rugby ball at the half. A investigation will start in 3 months…

1st Annual JMA High School Girls Rugby Tournament

This past Friday (May 8th and 9th) saw JMA High School host a local girls rugby tournament and also debut the JMA High School Girls Rugby Team.  In their first taste of High School Girls Rugby, JMA showed great commitment and dedication through 3 hard played games.  The official High School season kicks off this week.

IMG_20150509_141329

BMHS had to defend their goal line many times from MHS attack. Only once did MHS get through. BMHS kept is close long enough for them to capitalize on a feilding error and even the score. 7-7 was the final.

Six teams from our local area attended; JMA, École L’Odyssée, École Mathieu-Martin, Riverview High School, with Moncton High School and Bernice MacNaughton High School sharing the best result of a 2 win 1 tie record each.  The tie being the result of a 7-7 draw between both teams.

Cow Patty Bingo

A New one even for the Rugby field. Cow Patty Bingo. Guess where the patty will land and you can be a winner.

A great crowd of supporters, fine weather, very good field conditions and six very competitive teams made this a very successful event.  A special thanks to JMA High, the Town of Salisbury, The Pizza Mill, Laurie Moreton, Dr Mike Cochran, Sparx Wellness and most importantly Mike Cazzwell for organizing the event and coaching the JMA Rugby team.

U18 NB Spruce Boys Eastern Canadians Summary

The NB U18 Spruce boys had a successful Eastern Canadians overall, but fell short in the gold medal game on Sunday; losing 14-5 to the NS Keltic. Late Saturday afternoon, the Spruce beat rival Newfoundland Rock 10-5 in the semi final for the right to play NS in the final.

Earlier in the weekend, the team went 2-1 in the round robin while balancing playing time among the 27 players chosen to attend Eastern Canadians. The team uses Eastern’s to team build and gage the new talent before having to cut down the requisite 25 players for Nationals (August 4-11 Calgary Alberta).

This will be the 4th consecutive year that the team travels to nationals. Last year we had 3 players make the Canada u18 long list with 2 players playing for Canada on their tour of Europe in the fall of 2013. The NB u16 team had 7 players invited to Canada u17 camp last year so the Spruce have high hopes on having a strong Nationals tournament and putting the red maple leaf on a few more Spruce players this fall. Go Spruce!!

Eastern Canadians Summary for Black Spruce Women

The tournament placed NB VS NS as our first game. Although not reflective in the score (35-5) NB played some solid defence and came out very strong. The NS team went on to win gold and does comprise the majority of the Atlantic NWL(Naional Women’s League) Team. Our second game versus PEI was a success, pulling off a 10-0 victory. Day 1 ended with a 1-1 record. The team regrouped with a hydrotherapy session and BBQ at the Rundle’s in an effort to prepare for day 2.

2014 NB Women

2014 NB Women

Day 2 saw us play NL, and this was a must win game for NB to stay in the gold medal round. Unfortunately for us NL’s backfield and specifically a deadly 15, was too much for us on the day. They exploited our spaces with some effective kicking tactics ultimately leaving us to fight for Bronze on day 3.

Confidence may have been set prematurely high as NB was determined to take home the bronze. After a controversial try (suspected knock-on)…This very close game had us down 13-10 with minutes to play. Two strong attacks almost put us the lead. A penalty near half against NB lead to another 3 point convert. Sadly this sealed our fate as we could not put together the last attack that we needed.

While the results overall were disappointing we are very proud of the program that we rebuilt just this summer after failed attempts to build a program last year. Olivia DeMerchant from NB has been named to the Canada World Cup roster and we have identified 6 elite players that will be worked into the NWL program for the future. Simon Pacey has asked that Ali Massoudi stay involved with the selection committee for NB elite Athletes as we build the Provincial program to feed our National team.

I am also proud to say that 12 of the travelling team members were Black Tide Reps.
