What You Need To Know About The Play-offs

The teams from the Northeast have been set.  The #1 seeds are Moncton High School Girls and Harrison Trimble Boys.  Both will host a game on Sunday In Moncton.  The MHS game will be at 2pm on field 3 of the CN Sportplex followed by the HTHS game at 4:30 at the same venue.

IMG_5160

Both second seeds are planning to travel West on Sunday.  They are the Riverview High School Girls and Boys teams.

Congratulations to all four teams on representing our area and our sport very well.

Who these teams play is still up in the air and dependant on games to be played later today.

The games scheduled for today include the St. Mac’s boys playing at Oromocto High School (OHS) and Saint John High School (SJHS) hosting Fredericton High School (FHS).   The two girls games involve SJHS playing at OHS and Simonds High School hosting FHS.

The lower seed of each winner will travel into Moncton Sunday to Play HTHS and MHS while the top seeds will host RHS.

The 48 hour turn around between the divisional round and semi finals for the Southwest will certainly benefit the Northeast teams.  Those playing tonight will have to manage fatigue and injuries on a much tighter timeline.  Best of luck to all the teams in action today.

All provincial finals are slated for June 5th and will be in the Southwest conference unless both teams involved are from the Northeast division.

Could We Improve The League Points System Of The NBIAA?

Let’s start by explaining that the High School Rugby we have had the pleasure of enjoying follows Rugby Canada’s rules for U19 rugby, for the most part. NBIAA rules do take precedent over the Rugby Canada rules if they disagree.

LEagu

There are a number of interesting conversations that could be had about the NBIAA format regulating High School rugby.  Two of the most interesting are the League Points System and the Unlimited Substitutions. I would also make a small point about the Tie-Breaking Format for League Standings in that there seems to be some confusion about some of the terms.  Generally speaking, there isn’t an issue with the Tie Breaker rules and for the purpose of this post we won’t touch on the substitutions.  The bigger concern is that the League Points System could be structured to further decrease the number of ties in the standings.

Currently, each team are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. There is a wide variety of other ways to do this.  The Six Nations Championship which occurs each February and March amongst the 6 big European Rugby Nations only award 2 points for a win.  The tie breaker they use is similar to that used by the NBIAA, it is based on point’s differential or +/-.  As a result of this tie breaker variable, teams are often required to “run up the score” And this benefits no one.

A more modern approach to League Points System would be:

Win 4 points.
Draw 2 points.
Loss 1 point for loss within 7 points or less of the team that wins.
Loss 0 points for loss of more than 7 points.
1 point for scoring 4 tries or more in a match.

With this set up, a winning team can achieve 4 or 5 points and a losing team can achieve as many as 2 points.  The result is that teams are rewarded for getting 4 tries, not 10 tries.  The goal of this type of League Points System would be to hopefully reduce the number of ties. This should also reduce the likelihood  of three-way ties (where the head to head may be nullify).  It is also more in line with the current Rugby culture, something that is a positive influence and should be promoted.

Furthermore, it promotes a more open game of rugby, rewarding those who go looking for points.  This means the teams who play a 35-28 game are more highly rewarded than the teams who play a 10-7 game.  An indirect result of the open play is the reduction of play in congested areas.  This is voiced on Rugby fields as a change in the directions given.  The saying “run straight” has been shouted from the sidelines for as long as there has been rugby, now “run at spaces not faces” is being preached at practices.  I’m a strong advocate of the latter.

Let’s not confuse this change in approach as a softening of the game.  This change is to promote increased skill in the game.  The sport encourages this increase in skill by rewarding the scoring of four tries in a game.  There are certain local programs that encourage this wide play and support it with strong athletes in the outside back positions.  Specifically, the 2012 RHS Girls and the 2014 BMHS Girls come to mind, and both won provincial titles.

This League Point System also motivates teams who may not be in a position to win a rugby game (ie, being down 10 points on the last play). The team can still be rewarded by narrowing the score to less than 7 points and thus earn themselves a point in the standings.

To summarize, there is no draw back to implementing this type of League Points System, and the intent of this structure will far outreach simply clarifying standings and reducing ties.  It goes so far as to promote skill development, further encourage competition, and will make the game more fun to play. That last reason is enough for me.

AAA High School Girls Results May 28th 2015

RHS finished off the regular season with a convincing 51-5 win over École Mathieu-Martin.

Half time score was only 12-5 as EMM brought a strong rucking plan that had the RHS forwards off-balance.

RHS coach Mel Hughes regrouped the team at the half and sorted out a few issues and the tide turned in favour of RHS.

Scoring for RHS was Siobhan Murphy with 3 tries, Danielle LebLanc, Maggie MacPhee, Allison Inghan, Hannah Sears and Emily Elliot. Maggie MacPhee connected on 3 converts.

RHS now advances to the Provincial Semi-finals and awaits the winner of Simonds vs FHS. RHS will travel to the winners home field on Sunday.

Moncton Captain Maggie McPhee presented roses after the game to the 12 graduating girls at RHS.

BMHS finished out the season with a comprehensive 45-0 win at MVHS.

These results cement the Northeast entrants into the Playoffs.  RHS and MHS will represent the North East.  The South West representatives are still being determined.

High School AAA Regular Season Wraps Up Today.

In the North East today we have two final girl matches:

1. Riverview High School @ École Mathieu-Martin: This game is a win or go home scenario for RHS, as all games have been, since dropping the first game of the year to Moncton High.

emm3

The goal for RHS at this point is to make it to the provincial finals and earn a rematch against MHS, but first they have to ensure they succeed on the day at EMM.  A win for EMM would not only be great for their school, but École L’Odyssée would also be big winners, as it would propel them into a playoffs.

emm2

There is a general consensus that no one is interested in playing ODC again.  MHS managed only a tie in a game where ODC lost star flanker early in the game and RHS earned a win over ODC by the narrowest of margins and required a “held up” call in the RHS try zone during the closing moments to win the game.

emm1jpg

Although EMM cannot make the play-offs, they can certainly have final say on who will.  The team has been improving every game behind the “Parisse” like play of their 8 man.  Playing their last game of the season on home field, there is no doubt EMM will play an intense game.

2. Bernice MacNaughton High School @ Miramichi Valley High School: Last year Provincial Champs have had to face the best from each team they played.  When you are the champions, everyone brings their best game against you.  MVHS will be no different.

BMHS are looking to close the season strongly and are hopeful for a victory.  Otherwise, the vision is looking forward a year and the outlook is optimistic.  BMHS have some key players completing grade 11 this year, meaning they will be available next year at peak form.  In addition they have other young talent which will ensure their program is consistently competitive.

Riverview High School Boys Top MVHS, advance to Semi Final

In a great back and forth game in Miramichi the Royals came out on top 35-32. The Royals scored first with Brant Guimond scoring the try and Neal Lemoine converting it to make it 7-0. MVHS came right back to make it 7-5 with an unconverted try. Royals responded quickly to go up 14-5 with Neal Lemoine scoring and converting his own try.

IMG_4957

Then the MVHS Pulamoo’s roared back scoring 2 trys to go up 17-14 at the half. MVHS came out with a bang to start the 2nd half with 2 early trys scored by tough running from  their 10. Then the Royals picked up the pace to score 3 quick trys with about 10 minutes left in the game. Neal Lemoine got the first try picking up a stray ball to go 50 meters to score and converted his try for 2nd time in the game to make the score 27-21 MVHS. Then Josh Power had a tough run to score a try with Leo Kim converting it to put the Royals up 28-27. Royals responded again with Brant Guimond scoring his 2nd try of the game with Leo Kim getting the convert to make the score 35-27 Royals. MVHS came back and scored a try with about 5 minutes left to make the score 35-32. Then the Royals hung on for the last 5 minutes with great defence to make the final score 35-32.

Special thanks to Brian Bessey for the submission.

Riverview and Trimble Boys Advance to Provincial Semi Finals

At the Moncton Sport Plex BMHS played a great game against HTHS.  With a huge wind at their back in the first half HTHS had to score a late try in order to bring a 12-7 lead into half time.

20150526_164437

As the second half kicked off the wind maintained.    It was an optimistic outlook for BMHS.  They would have an opportunity to control field position with tactical kicking, but HTHS instead did their best to dominate possession of the ball.

A late converted try by Jon Blackier brought his total to 9, earned him man of the match, and brought the final score of 19-7. Brody Fall and Kyle Furze also scored for HTHS.

HTHS coach Art Moore: “(we are) very impressed with the BMHS coaches & program this year.  Every single game that they played they were highly competitive” Coach Jones added “Both teams brought their lunch pails, hard hats and work boots today!”

Coach Jones is expected to be cited by the NBIAA for over application of a cliché, but all things considered he is still happy with today’s outcome.

Try scorer for BMHS was Brandon Bird and Chris Sarault converted it. Jarod Savoie was the BMHS man of the match. Both coaches are incredibly proud of the team.

Coach Robbie Baxter had this to say; “Our goal this year was to just come out and be as competitive as possible while improving every game, and I think we did that. The great thing about having an inexperienced team is that everyone gets to play and with 9 of our starters returning next year I can’t wait to see what future years will have in store for our program.”

In the other divisional play-off game Miramichi again scores 32 points on Riverview. Fortunately for the visitors they increased there total from 5 in the last encounter to 35!!!.

This is an amazing result (35-32 for RHS).  MVHS have a great program and to beat them in this scenario is quite the accomplishment.  More details will come once they are made available.  With the RHS boys making the provincial semis and the RHS girls looking to do the same tomorrow, it certainly has been a successful year for RHS.

The Northeast Division will host the Provincial Final this year.  Ensure you get out and support these teams in their semi final games.

AA High School Girls Review

TRHS @ JMA Armstrong

JMA

JMA HS Girls

The women Titans travelled to JMA Armstrong in Salisbury last Tuesday, May 19 for their first of two games versus the Cougars. Michael Casswell of the Moncton Black Tide coaches JMA (as do many of the club members at high schools in the Moncton area and beyond). They have a young, inexperienced team that is building towards success as the team matures and gets more matches under their belts.

The Cougars are a closer match for the Titans’ Blue squad. The Blue are a development side of half of the TRHS team. The first half was a closer match. After half-time, the Red squad stepped on the field and it was a one sided game from then on.

From TRHS coach Jonathan W. Allen “A comment about high school rugby and standings. The plus/minus (points scored for and against) for each team is taken into account in determining playoff entries and standings. This forces coaches to run up the score when another team has done the same against a weaker team. I don’t think this serves the ideal of coaching for character and sportsmanlike behaviour to have to humiliate another team – especially at this level of the competition. I would like to see the NBIAA and all of the Athletic Directors revisit this and make by-laws to limit this ugly part of the game”

Tries

Selina Gaudreault 3 Tight Head Prop

Emma Snowdon 1 Flanker

Karisa Hicks 1 Scrum Half

Hannah Walton 1 Wing

Kathryn Whittemore 2 Centres

Katelyn Gamble 1 Backs

Delaney Acton 1 Stand Off

Ellen Davis 1 Hooker

Bryn Nurse 2 Hook/Loose Head Prop

Alexis Murray 2 Backs

Desiree Gould 3 Eight Woman

Karisa Hicks 1 Scrum ½

On Friday we will be posting a recommendation for how the NBIAA could alter how points are awarded to each team for wins, losses, ties etc.  The goal being to remove the emphasize on having a high +/-.  The hope is to allow participation of more athletes and more competitive games. Your input is welcome.

AAA Boys Playoffs Start Today.

Riverview HS Boys travel north to play Miramichi Valley High School at 5:30.  In the previous encounter MVHS came out on top with a 32-5 score.  Since then MVHS has gone 1-1 with a loss to HTHS and RHS have been 2-0 with wins over BMHS and Belleisle.  Wet conditions are expected.  This will mean a lot of tight running and tackling, but also offers much advantage to the stronger kicking teams.

Rugby1

Locally, we have Harrison Trimble High School Hosting Bernice MacNaughton High School.  Kick Off is at 4:15 at the CN4plex.  Again, this game will be played in very wet conditions.

Both RHS and BMHS will have a huge challenge if looking to exchange tight running and heavy hits with their opponents.  The wet weather will ensure more handling errors and often low scoring.  This best way to minimize errors and position yourself for success is to utilize the kicking game.  We are interested to see what percentage of possession in the defensive end will be kicked away in exchange for field position.

To Be The Best, You Have To Beat The Best

That’s what the Riverview High School Girls had to do yesterday, and they did it.  They brought an up paced game and strategy of attack that was executed at a high level.  As a result they have their fate firmly under their control.

RHS' biggest hurdle to another provincial championship may be hidden in this picture.

RHS’ biggest hurdle to another provincial championship may be hidden in this picture.

Try scorers for BMHS were Anna Mallard and Jessica Chesse.  BMHS will look to finish the season on a strong note vs MVHS on Thursday.

Thanks to Bob Wallace for the following summary:

“It was 30 degrees on the temp gauge in my car. The track was fast at the Sports Plex Field #3 and before anybody in the crowd of 200 knew what had happened, RHS was up 10 points to nothing on tries by Siobhan Murphy and Brett Cole.

RHS came out with a new plan which saw their fit forwards pick from the rucks and drive it down the flanks of the unsuspecting BMHS forwards.

RHS Coach Melanie Hughes thought that RHS seemed to pull together once again. “We worked on our fitness all spring and we selected our team based on fitness and skills. On these hot days it makes a difference when we can run bigger and heavier teams around the pitch.

Miss Hughes complimented the BMHS team. As defending Provincial Champions they have had a good run. Our North East league is very competitive as well. Just getting out of our zone is so difficult. We still must play our final game and anything can happen.

Hughes added “You know, we have grade 10 and 11 girls in some key decision-making positions this year. Our fly-half Jata McCabe had to face one of the top fly-halfs in NB, Amanda Lund, and Jata did really well defensively and scored the game winning try. She moved the ball with class and skill all day.”

Scoring tries for RHS we’re McCabe, Siobhan Murphy, Brett Cole, Danielle LeBlanc and Maggie MacPhee. MacPhee also booted a 35 metre penalty kick and added 3 converts to finish the day with 14 points.

Next up for RHS is a rescheduled game at EMM on Thursday. RHS has a simple formulae for making the play-offs. “We needed to win every game after we lost that first one to MHS. Some good character building experience for the ladies. I think the girls are really enjoying things after all the hard work they have put in”
