AAA High School Results May 25th

Riverview High School Girls win over BMHS 36-10. Should RHS win on Thursday and they will advance as the second seed in the Northeast.

MHS 1

Scorers for BMHS were Anna Mallard who subbed in at 9 and scored her first try and vet tight head prop Jessica Chesser.

Moncton High Girls finally met their match at Odyssee.  The two battled to a 12 all tie.  As a result MHS will advance as the Northeast 1st seed and ODC have to wait as see. Should RHS loss Thursday, ODC would be the 2ND seed.

An early injury to ODC star flanker Celine Hebert seemed to take the wide out if ODC.  It took a try by MHS fly half Jayde Olscamp to snap them out of it.

ODC did reply in the first half with a break and a try by Coline Ramade. The corner try left an impossible kick for Donelle, who did amazing to hit the upright.

The second half Olscamp scored again, this time unconverted. With the score now 12-5 for Moncton High, it seemed the ODC were on the attack for most of the 2nd half. As a reward Emily Donelle scored from inside center and converted her own try.

The game ended with a ODC player going out of bounds inside the MHS 22 at a 12-12 tie.

BOYS playoff action tomorrow.

High School Boys AAA Playoffs Start Tuesday

The North East Division of AAA High School Boys Rugby consists of 4 teams. In order of seeding they are 1-Harrison Trimble High School. 2-Miramichi Valley High School. 3-Riverview High School. 4-Bernice MacNaughton High School.

b1

Tuesday will see HTHS host BMHS and RHS travel north to play MVHS.

b8

BMHS are feeling great about themselves.   The program is in 1st first year of re-birth, in no small measure due to Robbie Baxter. His team has performed better in each outing and the proverbial light bulb went on recently. They are ready and up for the challenge. They had a very successful game versus the strong MVHS team and BMHS feel they will be stronger again on Tuesday. Coach Baxter had this to say “I think now with a few games under our belts and given the weekend to rest up and take care of our bumps and bruises MacNaughton could be the dark horse of the play-offs come Tuesday. It should be a good game and I’m looking forward to seeing what my boys can do”

b5

On the opposite side of the field for this kick off will be HTHS. They are undefeated, well tested, relatively experienced and under the leadership of veteran coach, Jones.  This is lining up to look like a “David vs Goliath” battle. The HTHS Trojans sit atop the NE division with a perfect 3-0 record going into the play-offs.

As an interesting side note, Coach Jones previously was the head coach of BMHS, during a time in which Baxter was a player for the school. But you don’t have to take my word for it(Look closely at the next picture, front and centre is Baxter with Jones on the right flank). Kickoff is slated for 4:15 pm at the CN 4plex.  Coach Jones is looking forward to the battle on Tuesday and had this to say about his last match; “Last week we had a tough game against Miramichi. We tackled hard and withstood the enormous pressure that there big forwards threw at us”

BMHS and HTHS are quite similar in size and speed. “We have a few bigger guys in our pack, so it’s no surprise that we will probably pound it up the middle and make them tackle us” said Coach Jones(which makes us think they might look to go wide a ton for a change 😉

b7

Riverview High are looking to go into Miramichi and level their record against MVHS. RHS previously lost to MVHS but recently got an exhibition game win over Belleisle.  The RHS confidence should be high.  Couple that with the enthusiasm of the coaching staff and they have all the ingredients they need to upset MVHS on Tuesday evening.

b2

Further down the road it is noteworthy that the NE Boys division will host the AAA provincial Championship game this year.  We are supportive and hopeful to have 1, or even 2, of these teams participating in that fixture.

b3

Good Luck to all the teams.  We hope you are healthy and play your best Rugby.

High School Girls AAA Playoff Preview and Standings Break Down.

There are only 2 play-off spots available for teams in the North East AAA Girls Division. We are entering the last week of the regular season and 4 teams still have a shot at a spot. There is a high possibility that 2 different 3 way ties can occur.

p6

The two teams on the outside are École Mathieu-Martin and Miramichi Valley High School.  Both of these teams have 2 games remaining.  One on Monday against each other and another on the 28th.  These two teams have been improving throughout the season and will have the chance to play spoiler on the 28th in nearly every circumstance.  The four team race is between Moncton High School(4-0), Riverview High School(2-1), École L’Odyssée(3-1) and defending champs Bernice MacNaughton High School(1-2).

p5

For reference the NBIAA tie Breaker regulation will be posted at the bottom of this post.

This Monday we have MHS vs ODC and BMHS vs RHS.

As we move forward here we are working under the premise that BMHS and RHS will win their games on the 28th.  If not, nearly all goes out the window.

p4

With that in mind we have 4 possible outcomes for Mondays game.

1. If MHS defeat ODC and RHS defeat BMHS, then MHS and RHS advance to the playoffs.

2. If MHS Defeat ODC and BMHS defeat RHS, then we have a 3 way tie between ODC, RHS and BMHS.  In this scenario MHS advance as the first seed.  The 3 way tie first tie breaker is head to head which is nullified due to each team having a  1-1 record versus each other.  The second tie break criteria is plus/minus.  In this scenario the games on the 28th will have a huge impact on the awarding of the second playoff spot.  Both BMHS and RHS have 2 games to play this week, so it is much too early to project the final +/-.  This maybe the most dramatic outcome possible.

3. If ODC defeat MHS and BMHS defeat RHS, then we have ODC and MHS in a tie break situation with 1 loss each.  The first tie break in a 2 team tie is head to head, meaning ODC would be first place and MHS would be second place.  In this scenario the game on the 28th become irrelevant. This is the least dramatic outcome.

4. If ODC defeat MHS and RHS defeat BMHS,  then we have our other 3 way tie between MHS, RHS and ODC for first place. Again the head to heads are all 1-1 and nullified.  The +/- isn’t finalized, but MHS are in a strong position. It is important to know that in this case only 1st place would be awarded based on +/-.  Once the 1st place team is identified, the remaining two teams are then in a “two team tie-break” which will revert to the head to head.  IF MHS are first, RHS also advances.  If RHS are 1st, ODC advances, If ODC are first MHS advance. Simple right.  Even in this scenario, we will have to wait and see the result of the RHS game on the 28th to award 1st place.

p3

Needless to say, the games coming up on Monday will make or break all 4 teams.  The only team for certain to have a  play-off spot is MHS, but home field could be lost to ODC in scenario 3.

RHS @ BMHS 5 PM at Field 3 of the CN Sportplex
MHS @ Odysee 5:30 PM @ ODC School FIelds.

Below is the NBIAA O.R. 19:

OPERATING REGULATIONS O.R. 19 – TIE BREAKING POLICY (Where league play is used in conference and interlocking regional competition, the order of rankings will be decided with this tie breaking policy. Regional and Provincial Tournaments will use the rules of the PSO of the sport involved.) Part A If two teams are tied: a) the record between the two teams b) points (goals) against between the two teams c) points (goals) against in the league d) sudden death game – neutral site Part B If three or more teams are tied: a) record among the teams tied b) (+) (-) game differential involving tied teams c) (+) (-) point differential involving tied teams d) points against among the teams tied e) points against in the league f) points for in the league For reference in using tie breaking policy please keep in mind: 1. When using any of the above criteria to break a three-way tie the intent is to determine the highest not the lowest place finisher. e.g.: If three teams are tied in standings and are also tied in their record against each other and the point differential is as follows: A (+3) B (-2) C (-1) Teams are no longer tied therefore standings would be A- 1st, C-2nd, B-3rd. For the same situation with a point differential of A (+4), B (-2), C (-2). A would be 1st. We now have a two way tie between B and C for 2nd so we would revert to using criteria for a two way tie. (Record between tied teams). For the same situation with a point differential of A (+2), B(+2), C (-2) we have a two-way tie for 1st so we revert to criteria for a two way tie for determining 1st and 2nd, C would be 3rd.

Riverview HS Boys win 10-7.

A big thank you goes out to Belleisle Regional High School and their coach Grant Beckingham for travelling to play this exhibition game.

rhs boys

Riverview had their hands full and at the end of the day it was a relatively low scoring affair.  Top notch defence ensured the final score was 10-7 for the hosts. BRHS, and all things Belleisle Rugby epitomizes the sprite of the game.

BRHS do complete in the AA HS competition whereas RHS are a AAA team, but anyone who has played Belleisle in a game of rugby can attest that if you don’t play your best game, you haven’t a hope.

Scoring tries for RHS were Leo Kim and Brant Guimond. BRHS had one converted try.

Check back soon for a breakdown of how the HS girls AAA Northeast division has shaped up.  4 of the 6 teams still in play as we enter the last week.

Thanks also to RHS head coach Trevor Mouland

Riverview HS Boys Host BelleIsle

In exhibition rugby action today RHS Boys Rugby will host Belleisle Regional High School.

Kick off is at 5:30 at Riverview high school.

BRHS will certainly arrive with a skilled and fit team, similar to RHS, and this may result in one of the higher scoring HS games you will see.

Game 1: Moncton High School vs Ecole Mathieu-Martin

Our back line came up big once again today. We should be in good shape for our game on Monday with BMHS.

Provincial Final Rematch Tonight!

This time ODC will host BMHS at 5:30 pm at the Odyssee school fields.  This is a rematch of last years final and both teams enter with one loss a piece.  It is projected that 1 loss is the most a team will carry into the crossover playoffs, meaning this is most likely an elimation game for these teams.

Rematch1

We’ve been keeping our eyes open for this one all week, don’t miss it!

Unbeatable? Moncton High Girls are off to a strong start.

The Moncton High School Girls team came on strong last year and have now really put their foot on the pedal.

MHS 1

Already this season they have got the best of RHS and BMHS. During the exhibition season they also got a win off of ODC. Moncton High have had the answer to every question put to them so far this year. The most challenging part is that they will likely have to defeat some of these teams again.

mhs2

The exhibition win vs ODC was a preview of next Monday’s rematch.  Beating a good team once is tough, doing it again even tougher. No tougher task may exist than should MHS have to face BMHS again, potentially in a provincial final.  MHS have so far drawn a tie and gotten a victory off of the provincial champs and have snapped their 16 game win streak.  Beating them again would be a monumental task.

MHS4

It may be fine for us to look forward in anticipation of a BMHS vs MHS final, but in the meanwhile MHS continue to take care of business. This past Wednesday saw them host MVHS. MVHS brought a really good young team and looked similar to how MHS looked a year ago.

MHS3

The MVHS back line was very quick and  their 10 and 12 broke the MHS line on more than one occasion. The unfortunate thing may have been that they had only 18 players available and the long drive and warm playing conditions took its toll. MHS only really managed to put the game out of reach in the last 20 minutes when Jayde Olscamp(NB U18) at 10 ran in 2 tries and Haley Hasson at 12 ran in another off of a line break from half.

MVHS got a well deserved try in the last 5 minutes of the game through sustained pressure on the MHS goal line. This was a good game played by both sides and some really exciting running rugby on both sides. MHS Captain Megan LeBlanc had an outstanding game at 8 and although she did not get on the score board she led from the front with many strong breaks including a well worked move that saw her take  the ball from the back of a scrum and run a double scissor move with 10 and 12 and then break up field for a 30m run. I like to call that the D.D.R.(Dummy, Dummy, Run!)

Thanks to Coach Olivier for information related to the MVHS game and Don for the pictures: donrob.smugmug.com

Moncton Area Well Represented on Provincial U18 Girls Rugby Team

A positive reflection on the provincial high school rugby girls championship being competed for by two Moncton teams last year, the number of Moncton area girls represented on the U18 provincial team has increased from 2 BMHS players last year to include 10 girls this year.

NB Woman

Travel distance and restrictions no doubt limited the total number of local athletes able to attend as the majority of training and games do occur in the Saint John/Fredericton Area of the province.

The following 9 players have been selected as a part of the 2015 U18 Spruce Women 15’s Team.

Ally Jones Moncton High
Brett Whalen McNaughton
Celine Hebert ODC
Coline Ramade ODC
Emily Donelle ODC
Jayde Olscamp Moncton High
Julie Cullinan McNaughton
Maya Montiel Mathieu Martin
Olivia Cormier Moncton High

To illustrate the strength of talent in the area you may notice that Riverview, Harrison Trimble, Tantramar and JMA aren’t represented, and I would like to think that is a result of athletes being unavailable to try out.  Some extremely talented players are present on all those sides.

This list also no doubt excludes a lot of “new to rugby” athletes.  Those competing in their first year are often working against a sharpe learning curve.  The talent pool present and on the rise in our region of South East new Brunswick is deep and growing quickly.

We look forward to these girls suiting up for the Senior Provincial Champions, Black Tide, in the future, and are excited to see the quality of the Black Tide U18 Girl 7’s team this summer.

HTHS Remains Unbeaten!

A huge victory for the Harrison Trimble Boys over MVHS.

Stock Photo from previous match

Stock Photo from previous match

MVHS are always a hard team to play and no doubt brought a tough brand of rugby into Moncton today.  HTHS showed in their recent win over RHS that they are a smash mouth, tight running team and that sort of style would have suited the extreme wet conditions of the field today.

MVHS were no doubt equal to the test and were able to also score two tries of their own. For HTHS Melvin McCartney & Vincent McCallister each scores a try and again the balance of the game favoured HTHS in the form of Jon Blackier being able to convert a kick to make the final 12-10.

This result allows HTHS to remain unbeaten on the Boys side while MHS do so on the Girls side.

Thanks to Coach Jones for the information. Good Luck to you and the squad in your next game.

Night Owls, check back at midnight to see what 9 locals made the Provincial u18 Womans team. A couple are from MHS.  Details on their(MHS) victory coming in the morning.
